When I was starting in business, the number one mistake I made was not having boundaries and not protecting my time.
My husband and I were getting out of debt and needed more money, so I decided to start a side business. I put an ad on Craigslist and got a couple of bookkeeping clients within about 24 hours. About two to three months later, I asked my boss if I could work part time because my side business was growing so much.
After I was part-time with this business, it began to tumble really, really quickly when it came to protecting my time and protecting my boundaries. When I was starting, my entire focus was on making money and getting out of debt.
I was working 30 hours a week at my job and 30 to 40 hours a week at my side business. I had three very busy step kids, and that meant missing baseball games, dance competitions and date nights with my husband. It had a very negative impact on our life at home.
My husband came to me and said we needed to find a better balance. In the past six years, I’ve worked hard on protecting my time. When you’re in start-up business mode, everything will feel like a fire that needs to be put out right now.
You need to remember there is nothing more important in your life than your inner circle, your family. Finding space and balance is what matters in your life. Resting and recharging is something you brain is going to require.
