Show Notes For This Episode

One of the reasons we started this podcast was to shine a light on great businesses and owners that you might not know about.

Today’s episode might fit that bill because Travis McKinley doesn’t do a lot of self-promotion. He lets his work and his companies speak for themselves. Even if you haven’t heard of Capital Insulation and Trak Roofing and Construction in Topeka, you might be aware of McKinley because he was named ’20 Under 40’ by TK Business Magazine a few years ago.

We asked him to come on and tell us his story because of how much time and effort he puts into his community. Not only does he run these businesses, but he also works with Mirror Topeka, which is a re-entry program for those who have been incarcerated.

As he’ll tell you, no one grows up dreaming of being a roofer when they’re young. So how did he get here? The answer is family. From lumber to tile setters to electricians, there aren’t many areas that his family doesn’t have experience in and that’s carried over into his career.

We’re going to cover a lot of ground during this episode, but let’s share a couple of the highlights. First, we like to ask about lessons owners have learned that might help others. For McKinley, that lesson is you never lose money from a job you never had. That’s a great thing for everyone to keep in mind.

The second is a story about a fight on a jobsite with a contractor that earned him the respect of his team and the guy on the other end. The message goes beyond fighting but hearing him recall this story is great.

We’ll let you check out the full show because there are many more takeaways:

  • Why he doesn’t market much
  • Processes he has in place
  • 3 things he tells all his employees.
  • How he’s learned from many failures along the way.
  • What he thinks is the key to success.

His businesses are old fashioned in that you won’t find a ton of information online about the companies and they prefer you give them a call at 785-246-1775.
